Prepare Your Property for a Storm

Make sure your property is ready for poor weather, such as severe winds. Secure the doors and windows to the various buildings, for example.

In a bad storm, you may not be able to leave your property for a while. Make sure you have enough food and water for yourself and your livestock in the event that you can't run to the store right away.

Prepare Your Farm Equipment for a Storm

Make sure your farm equipment is stored in a secure location. If possible, store the farm equipment inside a building to help reduce the negative effects of bad weather. Remember to regularly inspect the building and make sure there are no cracks in the windows or holes in the roof, which can compromise the building's ability to keep your farm equipment undamaged during a bad storm.

If possible, have a full tank of gas in your vehicle long before the storm reaches your area. If you need to leave the area, you don't want to be worried about running out of gas and getting stranded on the side of the road. Avoid keeping full cans of fuel stored in the vehicle, however, which can be a safety risk during a storm.

Prepare Your Livestock for a Storm

Animals can be easily spooked by a storm. The bad weather can also pose a safety risk to livestock. Make sure that all of your animals are secure and safe before a storm arrives. Try to keep them calm to reduce the chances that they get startled and hurt themselves. If the weather is severe enough to require evacuation, try to do this as soon as possible
