Used Skid Steer Loader Inspection Guide
Before buying a used skid steer loader, it's wise to conduct a thorough inspection of the machine. This will give you great insight into the current quality of the equipment as well as its predicted lifespan. Use the following tips to conduct an effective inspection.
Check the Hydraulics
The hydraulics system plays a key role in operating various parts of heavy equipment. A damaged hydraulics system can create performance issues in the used skid steer loader - and can be an expensive problem to fix. Signs of a possibly damaged hydraulics system include worn seals, leaky hoses and damaged fittings.
Test the Safety Devices
Every aspect of the safety devices should be in great condition, from the brakes to the steering assembly.
Check the Loader Arms
Look over the used skid steer loader's arms, including the:
- Cylinders and pins
- Bucket and bucket teeth
- Boom hinge points
- Boom pivot
If any parts will be requiring maintenance, be sure to factor those costs into your budget.
Look for Signs of Poor Past Maintenance
If the previous owner(s) did not properly care for the used skid steer loader, the equipment could be due for many expensive repairs soon after purchasing.
Signs that the used skid steer loader may not have been well-maintained include:
- Fluid leaks
- Ungreased pins
- Dirty air filters
- Rust
It's also helpful to ask for service records. See whether the past owner(s) kept up with preventative maintenance visits. If not, the used skid steer could be facing a much shorter lifespan or expensive parts replacements in the near future.
