Excavators are useful and practical machines that are used on construction sites and by residential homeowners, as well as by people in many other industries. These big pieces of equipment are not without their risks, however, so it’s important that everyone on your work site is well-versed in excavator safety. Here’s what we recommend you do.

Educate All Workers

Anyone who might operate the excavator on a work site needs to be instructed in how to use the machine. Review the owner’s manual and demonstrate where buttons and switches are located and how to turn the excavator on and off. Hands-on training is needed in addition to having your workers read and understand the owner’s manual. Regular trainings should be provided as a refresher.

Supply Safety Gear

All workers using an excavator need to be wearing the proper safety gear to protect themselves from injury or death. A hard hat is a requirement on every construction site, and eye protection is typically also necessary in the form of goggles. Work boots, heavy work gloves, long sleeves, and pants are recommended. Long hair should be tied up out of the way and jewelry, loose clothing, scarves, and other dangerous items should never be worn.

Remain Alert

When operating an excavator, it’s important to visually inspect the area around the machine when you get in the cab and to alert workers nearby that you will be operating the excavator. Other workers should clear out and give you a wide berth. Always maneuver the excavator slowly and carefully, rather than trying to work fast. Ensure that you are using the excavator in good lighting conditions, too.
